What are the IP values?

You often see an IP value on lighting, but what does this value really mean? IP is the abbreviation of Ingress Protection or International Protection rating. The first number indicates the degree of protection against solids and the second number indicates protection against moisture and water. A lamp hanging in your living room, a ceiling lamp in your room, a recessed spot in your dining room. No additional protection for your lights is required for these parts. A lamp with IP20 is usually sufficient inside. The bathroom and the outside is a different story. Water and electricity do not mix well, so you need a higher IP value in these rooms. The higher the IP value, the higher the protection.

The IP values of the lamps

  • The following IP values are the most common in lighting:
  • IP20: dustproof
  • IP21: drop-proof
  • IP23: Rainproof rain
  • IP44: splash-proof (fits all bathtubs and showers)
  • IP54: Splash and dust resistant
  • IP65: Protected against water jets
  • IP67: dustproof and protected against immersion for 30 minutes (suitable for bathtub or shower)
  • IP68: dustproof and protected against water

The bathroom and the outside can be divided into different areas where the lighting needs a different IP value.

Minimum IP value in the bathroom

Zone 1 is the area near the bath or showers up to 225 cm above the bottom of the bath or shower, so there is a lot of moisture and water and the lights need to a high level of protection. 65. The lighting must also operate on 12V.
Zone 2 is the area directly above the shower enclosure, around the sink and around the bath. This is the space up to 60 cm from zone 1. For this zone, at least IP44 applies.
The lighting in the other parts of the bathroom, so zone 3, which has no direct contact with drops of water, but where condensation can fall, requires a minimum IP value of IP21.

Minimum IP value in the garden

  • The garden can also be divided into different areas. In zone 1, the lighting is directly affected by all-weather influences. Rain, wind and hail, the lighting must be able to withstand everything. These lamps, therefore, require a high IP value, namely at least IP65. If you want to place the lighting in the pond, this lighting needs an even higher IP value, at least IP67. This lighting can be immersed in water.
  • Zone 2 is the area where the lighting is placed directly against the house, so it has a shelter, but the lamps are still hanging and are still reasonably open, so at least IP44 is recommended for this area.
  • Zone 3 is the last zone and this zone includes all the sheltered lighting. Think of commercials under the fascia, in a covered balcony or lighting in a porch or roof. This lighting does not come into direct contact with weather influences but often has to do with moisture. As a result, these lamps require at least IP23.
